Xanax (alprazolam) is a medicine that can reduce the abnormal excitement in the brain, helping to treat the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. Xanax must not be combined with certain medicines and you should know for sure which ones you are taking at the moment. Tell your health care provider in advance if you are taking antihistamines, sleeping pills, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antidepressants, oral contraceptives, antifungals, sedatives or cimetidine. This is not the complete list of drugs that should be reported to your health care provider. In fact, you must report any drugs – including herbal supplements or vitamins – to your doctor before you start the treatment. Some of them may alter the effects of Xanax, or Xanax can make them less efficient. In other cases your health care provider will need to monitor your condition to see if you experience any unpleasant side effects.
